First Review: Alpha by Jasinda Wilder

Alpha by Jasinda Wilder

This book intrigued me to the core, even more so when the cover came out looking sexy, gorgeous, and mysterious. It tantalizes you, leaves you thinking what it could be about. Many Jasinda Wilder novels grace my Kindle, including my favorites: the "Falling" series and the "Ever" trilogy. If you've read the latter, you know that a snippet of Alpha can be seen at the end of the third book. Like me, you were probably amped up and couldn't wait to find out more. I knew the caliber of Mrs. Wilder's writing and as I've mentioned before, she is one of my favorite authors. I was fairly certain to get an erotic love story with a healthy dose of angst if her previous novels were any indication. The bar was set high.

What is Alpha?

It’s a story about a 26-year-old woman named Kyrie.  As a breadwinner to an institutionalized mother and a dependent younger brother, she faces destitution upon losing her job. However, a saving grace comes at a perfect time in the form of 3 checks written to the amount of $10,000, each bearing a part of a statement that ultimately says, “You belong to me.” She has been expecting a repayment, although she doesn’t know how and when it will come. Then a man shows up at her door to collect her…blindfolded. She’s taken to an unknown location to meet her generous benefactor to pay for her debt. When she meets him, she’s told to remain blindfolded. He is not ready to reveal himself to her—why he has been sending the checks, who he is to her. Even his name is a secret.

Kyrie is obviously baffled by the situation she’s found herself in. She can’t comprehend what this man’s motives can possibly be. Even with question after question of why she is there and what he wants from her, she’s only met with cryptic confessions.
“You’re here because I own you, Kyrie."
The check man is very odd. Not only is he cryptic, he is also cold and creepy.

“You know what I want? What this is about? It’s about trust. Obedience. Compliance. You obey, I learn to trust you. “

Who says those things and not expect anyone to run?  Kyrie doesn’t run, though, because as baffled as she is, she’s even more intrigued. His sex appeal is apparent. He is forward, blunt, bossy, and possessive.
"I need you, Kyrie. You're mine. You belong to me."
He shows no signs of vulnerability. He is an alpha male. They are drawn to each other, however much still remain a mystery.
“I do not deny that I’m attracted to you, and that I have been for a long time.”

After chaste kisses and variations of “I can’t until you ask me to,” Kyrie and mystery man can no longer take the sexual tension and succumb to their lust. The book delves into what Jasinda Wilder’s novels are best known for—steamy sex scenes.  Sensuality teeters between HOT and SCORCHER. Jasinda Wilder can write a love scene like no one's business. I'm still not sure what it is that makes the sex in her books so hot and enticing, but who am I to question something good? Maybe it's the graphic nature of it. She nudges your imagination out of its comfort zone. Descriptions are raw, primal, frantic, and heedless of convention. She tugs you into the scene, makes you curious, surprises you, and leaves you needing more.
"You killed me. You fucked me dead."

Despite the steam factor, though, the story leaves something to be desired. The characters are not well developed. A small background story of the heroine is given in the very beginning. Mystery man’s background is nonexistent altogether until later in the book. A true sense of connection between the two is not established. Kyrie suddenly finds herself falling for a man she doesn’t know. If there is anything that turns me off more in a romance novel, it is insta-love. It’s just not possible! Even if it is, there needs to be more evidence of why and how this happens beyond a few chaste encounters that turn into frantic sex.

Be prepared for a big reveal. Mystery man confesses his motivation for providing for and protecting Kyrie. His confession will test their new and tenuous relationship. Nevertheless, the angst level stays fairly low compared to Jasinda’s other more popular novels.
