Better Deeds than Words by Georgina Guthrie: Excerpts and Review

image.jpeg

Excerpt # 1 from Better Deeds than Words
Daniel’s grandmother held out the salad tongs. "Daniel, take more tomatoes."
"I already have a few. I'm fine."
She tossed three more tomato wedges on his salad plate."Lycopene. It's good for the prostate," she said.
Daniel rolled his eyes and sighed.
"Prostate cancer," Patty said to me in a hushed voice. "That's what got Bradford—my husband. Never ate a tomato in his life. I'm convinced that's what did him in. Although I read an article recently about the importance of regular ejaculations as well. Not that Bradford had a problem with that."
I bit my lip to stifle a laugh. Daniel stared at her in stunned silence.
"You are having your oil changed regularly, I hope?" she asked him.
What the hell? Penny had said Patty was a corker, but nothing had prepared me for this! She was awesome! I blinkedback tears as I tried not to burst into laughter. Daniel, on the other hand, was choking on a mouthful of roast beef. I clappedhim on the back and handed him his water glass.
He gulped some and cleared his throat. "Jesus, Patty. That's a rather personal question."
"It's uptight people who impede the distribution of important information. Don't you think, Aubrey?"
"Oh, I couldn't agree more," I said, casting a meaningful glance at Daniel who narrowed his eyes at me.
He turned back to his grandmother. "Are you implying I'm uptight?"
"Implying? No, no, I was stating it as a fact. I happen to believe you need to extricate that rather long pole from—well, there's no need to discuss the sordid details at the table," she said.
Daniel put down his fork and looked back and forth between the two of us. "Huh," he said, miffed. "Okay then. Allow me to put your mind at rest. My oil is being changed fairly regularly. There. Satisfied?"
He picked up his fork and forcefully stabbed a carrot. I hoped his comment wasn’t intended as an admission that we were involved in an intimate relationship. Patty quirked aneyebrow at me and I held up my hands as if to say, “Don't look at me.” She surveyed Daniel expectantly and he cleared his throat.
"Unfortunately, I'm decidedly, um, self-employed, at the moment," he said.

Excerpt # 2 from Better Deeds than Words
"Now what’s that smile about?" Daniel asked, standingbehind me and wrapping his arms around me.
"I was just thinking about how much I love your forearms."
"You do?"
"Uh huh. They're very furry."
He chuckled. "No one's ever told me that before. Why am I picturing cavemen?"
I smiled and turned around. He leaned against me, pushing my lower back into the counter.
"I happen to find it very masculine," I assured him, swirling my fingers in the hairs peeping out of the top of his T-shirt. "I like this too, though," I murmured, dropping soft kisses along the expanse of smooth skin between the stubble on his throat and his chest hairs.
"So do I," he said, claiming my lips and kissing me deeply, his tongue working its magic as it moved against mine, turningme into a puddle of goo.
I tried to talk between kisses. "We probably shouldn't do this right now—"
"Aubrey, Patty’s snoring. It's nice not to be outside or in my car, don't you think? Throw me a bone." He kissed me again, moaning quietly against my lips.
"I'll give you a bone, all right,” I teased.
“Too late. I think you already did,” he said, smirking as he took in my superior smile.
“Not exactly a newsflash.”
“What, and you’re completely unaffected?”
“Did I say that?”
He cocked an eyebrow. “Typical country weather down south?”
I moved in close to his ear. “Typical English country weather.”

Excerpt # 3 from Better Deeds than Words
"Thank you, Daniel."
"For what?"
"For bringing me here. It means a lot that you would sharethis with me. This place is obviously close to your heart."
He pushed my hood back gently.
"You know you're making quite a home for yourself in my heart too, right?"
I swallowed thickly. Speechless again. I lowered my eyes, but he tilted my face up, kissing me tenderly, his tongue slipping warmly between my lips.
"Your nose is cold," I said as he pulled away.
"Your tongue is hot," he whispered.
I leaned into him, eager for more. He pressed his lips against mine, his hands caressing my face.
"I meant what I said a minute ago," he said. "You're all I think about. Sometimes I feel like I've known you forever, and other times you do or say something that reminds me how much I still have to learn. I wish we had more time together."
"I know what you mean." I snuggled into his neck as he held me close.
I have no precious time at all to spend, nor services to do, till you require,’” he whispered. “‘Nor dare I chide the world-without-end hour whilst I, my sovereign, watch the clock for you.'"
"You wrote that sonnet out for me a few days before Mary’s memorial service,” I reminded him.
"It’s a favorite.”
"The sonnets aren’t my specialty, unfortunately."
"You'd better brush up, Miss Price. I happen to know of an assignment that’ll require some attention to Master Shakespeare's sonnets."
"Jeez, here we go. On with the TA hat." I sighed.
He laughed. "Oh, come on, I've avoided shop-talk all evening. I've been good, haven't I?"
"I'd say you've been very good." I raised an eyebrow.
"And you, my lovely, are incorrigible," he said, kissing me with an intensity that made my heart
gallop.

FANGIRL REVIEW

***SPOILER ALERT***

I cannot begin to express how much I had been waiting to read Better Deeds than Words by the lovely Georgina Guthrie. From the moment I read the first book in the Words series, The Weight of Words--upon Sylvain  Reynard's recommendation--I waited, and waited, for 5 1/2 long months for the next installment. I might have attempted to coax Georgina (GG) on Twitter into accidentally publishing so I could finally gobble up her beautiful words. But, alas, it wasn't in her power to do so. To say I was overjoyed when I found out I was to receive an ARC is a severe understatement. The Gods had answered my prayers! Well, GG did through the SubClub Bookclub, but all the same.

Better Deeds than Words continues the oh, so sweet, yet forbidden romance between Daniel and Aubrey. Why is it forbidden? Think Gabriel's Inferno by none other than Sylvain Reynard: Gabriel and Julianne. This story isn't between a professor and student, but similar. Daniel is Aubrey's dashing TA in a Studies in Shakespeare class at the University of Toronto. Daniel's position of authority and his past make it difficult for them to pursue a romantic relationship. As their feelings toward one another grow, they must find ways to curtail their desires.

There are six weeks left in the semester and Daniel and Aubrey must tread carefully. So when an unfortunate missing glove incident exposes their secret to David Grant, Daniel's father, Aubrey promises to remain incommunicado with his son for the remainder of the semester. I know what you're thinking: What? How? Really? Rest assured. When situations conspire to keep two lovers apart, they get very creative. From funny, flirtatious e-mails (Oh, the e-mails!) to mixed CDs, Daniel and Aubrey will continue to embark on the relationship they're determined to let flourish, David Grant and rules be damned.

There are 5 reasons why Better Deeds than Words is a must-read:

1 - Forbidden romance. Who doesn't like to read about a love affair that keeps you on your toes? This story will have you asking: Will they get caught? What will happen if they do? Is that girl out to get them? Should they have done that there? ;-)

2 - Sweet and funny banter. This book is laden with it, and it will slay you.

Please refer to Excerpt #1.

Oil changes will never mean the same to me. Nor will self-employment. And English country weather.

Then there's more:
"Well, the blushing and stuttering, not to mention the drool--"
"Fuck off."
"You are the most fucktacular kisser."

Their terms of endermeant will melt your heart.
"Are you warm enough, my lovely?"
"Daniel--"
"Yes, poppet?"

I turned into a puddle every single time he called her poppet. There's no simple baby here. And Aubrey calls him sailor. I don't recall exactly how this came about but it's a very sexy nickname, don't you think? Need a visual?

Meet Justice Joslin, AKA GG's Daniel, AKA sailor. She's really very fond of him. Can you blame her? I must have counted at least three times Daniel's whiskers are referred to in the first few pages, and all I could think of was the guy above. o.0

My favorite quotes in the book belong to reason number 2. Ready?
"More waiting." I sighed dramatically. "Always with the waiting."
"It's very character building," he assured me.
"My character is going to be enormous by the end of the semester," I said dryly.
"Then it'll be right up there with my cold water bill," he countered with a cheeky grin.

3 - Impeccable writing. This has become synonymous with Georgina Guthrie to me since The Weight of Words. Her characters are very well developed. Each paragraph is elegantly described and the story transitions flawlessly from one page to another. You never have to think that a phrase or paragraph could have been written better. There's something about Canadian writers. I'm super excited to read more of her work!

4 - Shakespeare references. They are everywhere. Daniel and Aubrey's shared love of Shakespeare has made the Bard one of the book's central characters. Like the first book, this one begins each chapter with a Shakespeare quote that foretells what is to happen. Even if you are not a Shakespeare aficionado, you will appreciate the thought and effort GG has put into linking one of his plays or quotes to a particular situation in the story.

5 - Daniel Grant. Need I say more? Okay, perhaps a few things about our beloved sailor. I'm not sure how Aubrey remains in a solid form throughout the book because, like I said, poppet-->puddle. He's sweet, thoughtful, caring, charming, ROMANTIC, and SEXY as all hell. His vulnerability will tug at your heart, and his wit will have you googley-eyed. There's something about a guy who can recite sonnets by heart (even if you don't know what he's talking about, LOL). Should we have another look at sailor? Yes!

What? Too much clothing? Well, read Better Deeds than Words and you can imagine sailor in all his naked glory. There are SEX SCENES!!! Chaste kisses from the first book have long sailed (hehe). You won't want to put out the fire once it starts. Daniel and Aubrey make up for lost time, people! Maybe this should have been reason number 6, but we'll just call it a tantalizing post script.

FLAT-OUT CELESTE COVER REVEAL

We were introduced to Celeste in Flat-Out Love and readers wanted more! Well, more they shall have! Look at this amazing cover and take a peek inside FLAT-OUT CELESTE!

COMING SOON!

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Whether you were charmed by Celeste in Flat-Out Love or are meeting her for the first time, this book is a joyous celebration of differences, about battling private wars that rage in our heads and in our hearts, and—very much so— this is a story about first love..

For high-school senior Celeste Watkins, every day is a brutal test of bravery. And Celeste is scared. Alienated because she’s too smart, her speech too affected, her social skills too far outside the norm, she seems to have no choice but to retreat into isolation.

But college could set her free, right? If she can make it through this grueling senior year, then maybe. If she can just find that one person to throw her a lifeline, then maybe, just maybe.

Justin Milano, a college sophomore with his own set of quirks, could be that person to pull her from a world of solitude. To rescue her—that is, if she’ll let him.

Together, they may work. Together, they may save each other. And together they may also save another couple—two people Celeste knows are absolutely, positively flat-out in love.

                                                                 Excerpt

There was a knock at the door and Matt leaned in, swinging a brown paper bag in her direction. “I heard Mom made stuffed peppers tonight. Last time she made those, I nearly died from flatulence. I assume she stuffed them with her usual repulsive ground chicken, quinoa, Brussels sprouts, and pomegranate seed mix?”

Just the sound of Matt’s voice made Celeste relax. She smiled at him. “Based on the smell, I believe you’re right.”

“So you didn’t eat then? I was right!” Matt flopped onto her bed and lay down, his long body scrunching up the neat white comforter that she spent ten minutes arranging before she’d gone to school this morning. “I thought I’d take a break from studying and bring you something edible.”

“It smells like a burger from Mr. Bartley’s,” she said as she got up and took a seat next to Matt. “Hand it over, thoughtful brother.”

He tightened a hand around the top of the bag. “You have to guess which kind I brought you first.”

“How am I supposed to know?”

“Close your eyes.”

She did as instructed and felt him move the bag under her nose. Sweet, spicy... a bit garlicky. “Aha! Boursin cheese and bacon! The Mark Zuckerberg burger!”

“And sweet potato fries and a bottle of iced tea, but you win. A burger named after ‘the richest geek in America,’ as the restaurant calls him.”

“You will be the richest geek in America after you finish your Ph.D. Program,” Celeste said through a mouthful of fries.

“If M.I.T. doesn’t land me in a psych unit first.”

“You only have this year left to endure. And you will hardly find yourself in need of psychiatric care, Matthew. You are doing stupendously.”

“I’m scraping by.” Matt reached into the bag and grabbed a handful of fries and opened her iced tea.

“You are not ‘scraping by.’ You are assistant teaching classes, excelling in your own, and in all ways performing to standards that exceed even the high ones our mother set for you.” She frowned as he chewed on the fries. “Did you not eat?”

“I did. A Big Papi burger and a Fiscal Cliff. But you can never have enough sweet potato fries.”

“I have a finite amount of my own from which you are stealing. But I shall not complain because this was very kind of you.”

Matt chewed and studied her. “Are you okay?”

“Why do you ask?”

“No contractions. When you’re stressed out, they disappear.”

“I know. But most days I do not care to use them. If it is an effort, then I do not push.”

“Okay. I get it.” He chewed for a minute. “I heard your presentation went well. Did your friends like it?”

“It went marvelously. My friend Dallas took me aside to share quite the flow of compliments.”

“That’s great, Celeste.” He was downing half her iced tea.

“And then I bitch slapped her.”

Matt choked on the drink and desperately tried to clear his airway. “I’m sorry. You did what?”

She cocked her head. “I bitch slapped her.”

“That... that can’t be right,” he sputtered. “I mean, I hope it’s not.”

“I slapped my hand against her hand. Up in the air.” She looked at Matt blankly. “Is that not the right term?”

“Thank God, no, it’s not. I think you mean a high-five.”

“If you say so. Well, either way, it happened. You know I have trouble with colloquialisms, so I resent your shocked reaction.”

“I do know that about you, and I apologize.”

“Since we are on the subject, there is something else I would like for you to clarify.”

“Shoot.”

“What is meant by ‘nut bag’? Is that a testicular reference or merely the identification of a satchel of cashews or pecans?”

Matt groaned. “This conversation has gotten really weird. Could we just talk about— Wait a minute. Why are you asking me this? Did someone say that to you?” He looked angry.

Celeste picked at her fry. “No. Certainly not. I heard the term and had a natural curiosity.”

“Okay then...” Her brother crumpled up the paper bag and then smoothed it out in his hands. Then crumpled it again. “It’s the same as ‘nuts.’ You know, crazy.”

“Thank you for the definition.” She took the last bite of her burger and wiped her hands on one of the paper napkins. It shouldn’t matter what her classmates thought of her. Celeste would just be strong about this. She would move on.

First Review: Alpha by Jasinda Wilder

Alpha by Jasinda Wilder

This book intrigued me to the core, even more so when the cover came out looking sexy, gorgeous, and mysterious. It tantalizes you, leaves you thinking what it could be about. Many Jasinda Wilder novels grace my Kindle, including my favorites: the "Falling" series and the "Ever" trilogy. If you've read the latter, you know that a snippet of Alpha can be seen at the end of the third book. Like me, you were probably amped up and couldn't wait to find out more. I knew the caliber of Mrs. Wilder's writing and as I've mentioned before, she is one of my favorite authors. I was fairly certain to get an erotic love story with a healthy dose of angst if her previous novels were any indication. The bar was set high.

What is Alpha?

It’s a story about a 26-year-old woman named Kyrie.  As a breadwinner to an institutionalized mother and a dependent younger brother, she faces destitution upon losing her job. However, a saving grace comes at a perfect time in the form of 3 checks written to the amount of $10,000, each bearing a part of a statement that ultimately says, “You belong to me.” She has been expecting a repayment, although she doesn’t know how and when it will come. Then a man shows up at her door to collect her…blindfolded. She’s taken to an unknown location to meet her generous benefactor to pay for her debt. When she meets him, she’s told to remain blindfolded. He is not ready to reveal himself to her—why he has been sending the checks, who he is to her. Even his name is a secret.

Kyrie is obviously baffled by the situation she’s found herself in. She can’t comprehend what this man’s motives can possibly be. Even with question after question of why she is there and what he wants from her, she’s only met with cryptic confessions.
“You’re here because I own you, Kyrie."
The check man is very odd. Not only is he cryptic, he is also cold and creepy.

“You know what I want? What this is about? It’s about trust. Obedience. Compliance. You obey, I learn to trust you. “

Who says those things and not expect anyone to run?  Kyrie doesn’t run, though, because as baffled as she is, she’s even more intrigued. His sex appeal is apparent. He is forward, blunt, bossy, and possessive.
"I need you, Kyrie. You're mine. You belong to me."
He shows no signs of vulnerability. He is an alpha male. They are drawn to each other, however much still remain a mystery.
“I do not deny that I’m attracted to you, and that I have been for a long time.”

After chaste kisses and variations of “I can’t until you ask me to,” Kyrie and mystery man can no longer take the sexual tension and succumb to their lust. The book delves into what Jasinda Wilder’s novels are best known for—steamy sex scenes.  Sensuality teeters between HOT and SCORCHER. Jasinda Wilder can write a love scene like no one's business. I'm still not sure what it is that makes the sex in her books so hot and enticing, but who am I to question something good? Maybe it's the graphic nature of it. She nudges your imagination out of its comfort zone. Descriptions are raw, primal, frantic, and heedless of convention. She tugs you into the scene, makes you curious, surprises you, and leaves you needing more.
"You killed me. You fucked me dead."

Despite the steam factor, though, the story leaves something to be desired. The characters are not well developed. A small background story of the heroine is given in the very beginning. Mystery man’s background is nonexistent altogether until later in the book. A true sense of connection between the two is not established. Kyrie suddenly finds herself falling for a man she doesn’t know. If there is anything that turns me off more in a romance novel, it is insta-love. It’s just not possible! Even if it is, there needs to be more evidence of why and how this happens beyond a few chaste encounters that turn into frantic sex.

Be prepared for a big reveal. Mystery man confesses his motivation for providing for and protecting Kyrie. His confession will test their new and tenuous relationship. Nevertheless, the angst level stays fairly low compared to Jasinda’s other more popular novels.

Stars, Sheldon Cooper, & Come What May

Remember how I previously said I'd never written a review before? Well, it SUDDENLY occurred to me that I'd never really read a formal review, either. D'oh! What am I doing here? Clearly I do not belong. I did some looking, though, and found a helpful guide in RT Book Reviews (Hallelujah, I just learned how to link!)

It explains what constitutes 1- to 5-star ratings. It goes as follows:

4 1/2 Gold: Phenomenal. In a class by itself.
4 1/2: Fantastic. A keeper.
4: Compelling. A page-turner.
3: Enjoyable. A pleasant read.
2: Problematic. May struggle to finish.
1: Severely Flawed. Pass on this one.

Why isn't there a 5? Hmmm.

They also have a "Sensuality Rating," appropriately so. Excuse me while I channel George Takei: Oh myyy (By the way, follow him on facebook. His posts are hilarious.) Books will be rated on their steam factor like this:

SCORCHER -- Borders on erotic. Very graphic sex.
HOT -- Most romance novels fall into this category. Ranges from conventional lovemaking to explicit sex.
MILD -- May or may not include lovemaking. No explicit sex.

This shall be my Northern star, pending a strike of originality.

*gets sidetracked by Sheldon Cooper on TV in a French maid costume*

Oh, yeah! Structure. I need structure. What's the format for reviews? What do I say? Obviously I can't put spoilers, right? How long should it be? Heck, I don't know. But I do know that I will try my darnest to be honest, come what may (she believes, and that faith is something I've never known before - Air Supply, anyone? Nevermind.)

Let's wing it.

Learning the Ropes

*gets up on stage, grabs the mic shakily, and starts rambling*

Hello, my name is Khristine, or Kay.

The purpose of this blog is to be brave. I'm not accustomed to putting myself out there--let alone in writing--for everyone to see and judge. Grammar and punctuations scare the living hell out of me. Not making sense to anyone scares me even more. I'm hoping that as time passes, I will learn to shed those fears and become a good and useful blogger.

I've read countless of books since my honeymoon (Yes, I started a book binge on my honeymoon close to two years ago, thanks to E.L. James). Fifty Shades of Grey changed my reading life forever. Reading essentially disgusted me before that. It simply was just not fun. Little did I know that I only needed to find my niche, my genre. After Fifty Shades, I read every single book with ample reviews similar to it. Amazon must have been jumping for joy with my newfound addiction.

Changing the method through which I read books helped in my transformation from non-reader to avid reader as well. Don't judge me, but I can't seem to read real books, as in books made of paper that you can smell and feel. Even though I read Fifty Shades in print, I've long since switched to e-books, and the difference is otherworldly (Is otherworldly a word? It is now). The convenience of eBooks has made it possible for me to purchase and read so many books. I can be reading at any given time, at any given place. Add the less expensive compared to print price factor, and I've hit gold. I am also an audiobook addict, perhaps even more so than an eBook one. Audible.com is my friend. Whispersync is my best friend. I can be seen at work with earbuds securely fastened into my ears for most of the day. Needless to say, my reading habits have had a Cinderella transformation. I found Cinderella in me, Colleen Hoover!

What do I read?  Well, if you go into the Amazon Kindle Store>Kindle eBooks>Romance>Contemporary, you'll probably see my name. That's where I get the magic. I mean...I read a lot of books from there. ;-) Some authors that are near and dear to my heart are: Colleen Hoover, Jessica Park, Jamie McGuire, Abbi Glines, Jasinda Wilder, and Sylvain Reynard. I could go on and on but there just wouldn't be enough space in this blog.

In November of 2013, I created a Twitter account for the sole purpose of following my favorite authors. It opened a whole new world for me and made it possible to interact with the people who wrote the books that moved me, as well as those who enjoy the same books as I do. I found that being able to interact with an author about their book--and instantaneously, too--makes a huge difference in a reading experience. It's just fun. It's also fun to know what other people think of the book you're currently reading. It's even more fun to receive book recommendations from the authors themselves!  #IloveTwitter

I wanted to blog about romance novels, plain and simple. But beyond giving an occasional opinion or letting a specific author know what I think of their book on Twitter, I've never formally given a book review. Confession time: I lied when I said in the beginning that the purpose of this blog was to be brave. That's B.S. I actually started this blog because I wanted to be legit so as to have access to book ARCs. (Thanks, Helena Hunting. Please approve my request for Inked Armor! ;-)) Phew! Now that that's out of my chest, I have to say that I do wish to be a reliable and honest book reviewer, maybe even a non-boring one. I will do my work and be useful to you! The ins-and-outs of this blogger/reviewer world are still lost on me, but maybe I will just do my own thing for a while, unless someone decides to save me from myself. In the meantime, please bear with me as I learn the ropes. I will try to write at least one review per week and go from there.

With that said, I'm currently reading Alpha by Jasinda Wilder. Let's read together! Get it here: http://www.amazon.com/Alpha-Jasinda-Wilder-ebook/dp/B00IRGU5OU/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1399041718&sr=1-1&keywords=alpha+jasinda+wilder
Review to come...on here...on my very own blog. Mine, mine, mine!
